Our facility receives a variety of material brought to us by homeowners, landscapers, Sanitary Service Company, Nooksack Valley Disposal, and RDS. This material is used for our feedstock which creates a nutrient-rich, beautiful compost.
Upon arrival, all material is sorted to remove non-compostable items. From there, the material is put through a machine to be ground and mixed. This allows the beginning stages of compost to obtain an ideal carbon to nitrogen ratio. A loader then builds heaps onto an aerated row. Finally, the heap is covered with a Gore cover which keeps the odors contained. Each row contains air channels with automated fans to incorporate oxygen for composting. Probes are inserted into the heaps to monitor temperature, this ensures elimination of pathogens. After the compost has cured, a sample is sent to a lab for testing to ensure quality. Once the curing process is completed, the compost is taken to be screened. Here it is separated out into three sizes: coarse, medium, and fine. It is now ready for use.
